Type of Blood Test

The full blood count (FBC) test is used to analyse the number of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets in your blood. It is one of the most commonly performed blood tests and is a good indication of your general health.

It often detects signs of anaemia (iron deficiency), vitamin B12 deficiency, infection, inflammation or clotting problems.

Blood glucose tests are used to diagnose and monitor diabetes by checking the level of sugar (glucose) in the blood. There are a number of different types of blood glucose tests including: fasting glucose test, glucose tolerance test and HbA1C test. Your doctor can help explain which test is right for you.

Blood tests can help determine if you have cancer or are a high risk of getting it. Three common cancer’s we test for are prostrate, ovarian and breast cancer.

A coagulation blood test will test the time it takes for you blood to coagulate (thicken). If it takes a long time for your blood to clot, it may be a sign of a bleeding disorder such as haemophilia or Von Willebrand disease.

Minerals such as, sodium, potassium or chloride, occur naturally in our bodies and are called Electrolytes. They are vital for maintaining healthy water balance in our bodies.

An electrolyte test can detect changes in the level of these minerals and help to diagnose possible causes, including dehydration, diabetes or even unwanted side effects from medications you may be taking.

Genetic testing can help to determine the chances that you may develop certain conditions, such as Huntington’s disease or breast cancer.

A thyroid function blood test can help to measure the levels of TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone in your system.  If the levels registered are not within a normal range then you may be diagnosed with a underactive or overactive thyroid.

Cholesterol is a fatty substance mostly created by the liver from the fatty foods in your diet and is vital for the normal functioning of the body. Unfortunately high levels of cholesterol can cause heart attack or stroke.

Usually two samples are required for a blood culture test. The purpose of this test is to ascertain whether there is bacteria present in your blood.

A chromosome test will detect genetic anomalies and is often used to determine the cause of repeating miscarriages.

A CRP test may sound complicated but CRP is an actual protein produced by the liver. A CPR test is helpful when diagnosing conditions that cause inflammation.

ESR tests are very helpful in determining the possible cause of inflammation or infection. This test could help determine if you have arthritis, endocarditis or Crohn’s disease.

A liver function test measures the levels of enzymes and proteins in your blood. This helps to determine if you liver is functioning well.

Particularly helpful diagnosing hepatitis, cirrhosis (liver damage), and alcohol-related diseases.
